Glitz, Glamour & Gorgeous

I have a design crush on the Boston area designer Gerald Pomeroy! Wow! His work is absolutely phenomenal and has graced the pages of the design mag big dogs such as Traditional Home and Better Homes and Gardens, among many other publications.

Mr. Pomeroy’s designs in these rooms are reminiscent of the Hollywood Regency period (which is a personal favorite of mine) mixed with a little Directoire. So much of this style is defined in the details…elaborately carved mouldings, wonderfully rich fabrics, silk lampshades, Chandeliers with crystals, furniture scaled and placed for entertaining. It is about making a space a showpiece for guests, from the lost days of dinner parties, cocktail hour and company, before we all had open floor plans and big screen plasmas.

These rooms, to me, are about entertaining and how people will interact with each other around the furniture instead of with the furniture.

I love the hip marriage of the traditional composition of the cherry blossom wall covering with a metallic background. The geometric rug makes the room feel fresh and transitional while the distressed table also lends a hand in keeping the room from feeling stodgy.

This living room is just gorgeous. The palette is serene and ethereal but still has weight and substance, a tough combination to master.

The kitchen is an “updated traditional” take on classic French style. Not one detail is forgotten, from the beveled edges of the Carrera marble back splash bricks to the flush cabinet fronts. The marble apron front sink is to just die for and the double ogee edge on the countertops creates interest without visually interrupting the clean lines of the space.

Could you spare just an ounce of that talent Mr. Pomeroy?

Decorative pillows are one of the easiest ways to make ho-hum bedding something special or to just dress up a basic chair. I, myself, have a small obsession with decorative pillows (ahem...ok maybe it isn't so small). I buy them all the time, because with just the switch of a pillow you can have an entirely new look. Here we go...

At the end of 2007 I took a huge leap of faith and resigned from the comfort of working for someone else and started my own little-design-company-that-could, M. E. Beck Design, Inc. The past year has been an incredible experience. Despite a very steep learning curve for the business side of things, I have been able to keep this little company moving right along and surprisingly growing. It has, by far, been the best thing that I have ever done for myself. I love what I do and, now more than ever, it is so rewarding! I have often received requests from my clients about starting a design and lifestyle blog. So, here I am, writing my very first post, with no idea whether or not anyone other than myself and possibly my husband, will ever read this thing. However, it is always something that I have wanted to do and so here it goes.
I am inspired daily by the many blogs that I read myself and I hope that whoever comes to read my little blog will be inspired as well.
